Pruning That Works With the Tree

We prune to live branch collars, never flush-cut, and never remove more canopy than the tree can safely recover from in a season. Crown thinning opens the canopy to air and light without stripping it; deadwood removal drops the limbs most likely to fail in a storm before they come down on their own.

For shoreline properties around Detroit Lakes, Pelican Rapids, and Vergas, vista pruning lets you reclaim your lake view without topping the tree, a practice that weakens structure and shortens tree life. We shape, we don't scalp.

Our Process

How We Structure a Pruning Visit

  1. 1

    Tree & Canopy Inspection

We inspect each tree's structure, deadwood load, included bark, and competing leaders, and identify which cuts will improve health versus which would harm it.

  2. 2

    Season & Species Check

We confirm the species and the time of year. Oaks are scheduled outside the oak-wilt transmission window; elms outside the Dutch elm disease season.

  3. 3

    Crown Thinning

Selective removal of crossing and competing branches opens the canopy to wind flow and light, reducing the sail effect that snaps limbs in storms.

  4. 4

    Deadwood Removal

Hanging and dead limbs, the ones most likely to fall on people, decks, and roofs, are taken down cleanly at the branch collar.

  5. 5

    Vista & Clearance Pruning

We lift low limbs over driveways and trails and open selective sightlines to the lake without topping or over-thinning the canopy.

  6. 6

    Cleanup

All cut limbs are chipped or hauled. Firewood-grade material is processed and donated to local families in need.

FAQ

Limbing & Pruning, Common Questions

When is the best time to prune trees in Minnesota?+

Most species prune well in late winter dormancy. Oaks, however, are safest pruned in the dormant winter months to avoid oak wilt, which spreads through open wounds during the spring and early-summer sap-flow season. We schedule each species in its correct window.

How much of the canopy can you remove at once?+

As a rule we avoid removing more than roughly 20–25% of a healthy tree's canopy in a single season. Over-pruning starves the tree and triggers weak, fast-growing watersprouts that fail in storms.

Do you top trees?+

No. Topping, cutting main leaders back to stubs, destroys tree structure, invites rot, and grows dangerous regrowth. We restore views with selective vista pruning that keeps the tree sound.

Can pruning reduce storm damage to my trees?+

Yes. Crown thinning reduces the wind sail effect that snaps limbs and tips shallow-rooted trees, and removing deadwood eliminates the branches most likely to come down in a storm.
